CES Top 10 List - Plus, 90% of the ATSC 3.0 demos at CES were powered by DekTec
Posted on Wednesday, January 31, 2018

It was another great Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas this year, and we were especially pleased to see DekTec's DTU-315 powering demos all around the show.

In case you didn't make it to the show, I put together my "Top 10 Observations and Discoveries" list to share:

1. It's BIG! CES 2018 had 180,000 visitors and 4,000 exhibitors. Makes NAB look like a local show.

2. The ATSC 3.0 standard was released at CES! Now we can develop a real business model. Sinclair and Pearl are really pushing for ATSC 3.0 deployment.

3. HDMI 2.1 specification was released. This allows 8Kp60 and 4Kp120 distribution over HDMI cable. That's 48Gbits/s for a single video over copper. Don’t plan to run your TV display into the next room on copper wire.

4. New displays: 8K, HDR, 4Kp 120 frames per seconds. Only ½ inch depth, great color and black. Now all HDR is supported including Dolby Vision, Technicolor HDR, HLG PRO, and HDR1- Pro.

5. Artificial intelligence in TV – Added processing power into the TV. Said to help improve quality as it analyzes content being display in real time. Now the real value is to know what program you are watching and from what source. Advertiser's dream!

6. Self driving cars – The inside of the new cards is full of TV displays. Aren’t we trying to reduce distraction at least until the car can self drive? I think we will have many self driving cars on the highway within 5 years.

7. Drones are getting really large. Some drones can carry humans, or large payloads into the field.

8. IoT (Internet of Things) is running out of ideas and things to connect to. I saw a connected toothbrush that provides a report on what tooth needs more brushing… hmmmmm.

9. Voice control of every device: TV, phone, set-top box, home automation devices. Alexa has some competition; Google Home, Apple HomePod. Obviously, people are getting lazier and lazier. Stay connected to the couch at all times.

10. The LVCC central hall lost power for 3 hours during show primetime. Without electricity, there are no consumer electronics. People didn’t know what to do… Maybe we should couple CES with a power generator show.
