Laser projection is here: Barco leads digital cinema laser evolution with industry-leading engineering and global deployments
Posted on Monday, October 27, 2014

Rancho Cordova, Ca., USA – 27 October 2014 – Barco, the global leader in digital cinema projection, confirms that its award-winning 4K 6P laser-illuminated projectors are currently shipping globally. Mass production begins in Q1 2015 and additional units are available to order now.

The future of cinema is already here
To date, Barco’s list of new laser projector owners includes some of the industry’s leading movie exhibitors: Cinemark, Kinepolis, Santikos, and several top theater chains throughout China, Latin America and Europe. Barco’s laser-illuminated projector also recently won the prestigious Beijing International Radio, TV & Film Equipment Exhibition (BIRTV) award and the “Lumiere™ “Technology and New Product” award from the International 3D & Advanced Imaging Society. Barco’s latest news on laser projection can be found here.

“When we developed our laser projector, we knew immediately that Barco was setting a new standard for image quality in the cinema industry,” comment Todd Hoddick, VP Global Entertainment for Barco. “Our customers wholeheartedly agree, which is why they’ve embraced our laser projectors for the delivery of an unparalleled moviegoing experience elevating the immersive realism of motion pictures.”

First in quality, first to market
Designed from the ground up, the Barco DP4K-60L laser projector is the simplest and only fully integrated 6P solution for cinema and the first of its kind capable of showing 4K content at 60 fps and 3D movies in full 4K resolution. It is also the only RGB laser projector to achieve DCI compliance, marking another digital cinema industry first for Barco.

The most compact 60,000-lumen projector available, the DP4K-60L features a fully integrated system with unified laser light sources that are housed inside the projector, ensuring high durability and system efficiency. The Barco Laser3D system supports Polarized, Active shutter, and color 3D separation, offering maximum efficiency in color-based 3D from a single projector to provide brighter 3D and deliver constant and uniform images with excellent contrast and no lamp flicker.

Ushering in a new era in cinema entertainment
Barco’s laser projector is an integral part of the CinemaBarco experience, designed to deliver visually spectacular, immersive entertainment tailored to a new generation of moviegoers. From the lobby, to the auditorium and beyond, Barco’s latest innovations boost engagement before, during and after the show with creative, interactive experiences that bring the entire cinema to life.

Thought leadership on laser projection
Bill Beck, widely-known as “The Laser Guy,” will present a discussion on the merits of laser vs. xenon at ShowEast University on Thursday, October 30 at 8:30 am at the annual movie exhibitor event in Hollywood, Florida. Beck joined the Barco team earlier this year to further strengthen its leadership team in laser-illuminated projection.
