Barco installs bedside smart terminals at Ziekenhuis Oost-Limburg hospital – a first in Belgium
Posted on Friday, June 21, 2013
Kortrijk, Belgium, 21 June 2013 – Barco, a global leader in healthcare IT solutions, today proudly announces the opening of the first hospital in Belgium to feature Barco bedside terminals, including advanced point-of-care enterprise software. The 60 terminals installed at the new wing of Ziekenhuis Oost-Limburg (ZOL) in Genk offer entertainment options (TV, radio and Internet access) as well as touch screen controls for lights and blinds. Both the number of terminals and their functionality will be extended in the future. “We’re confident that this technology will enhance the well-being of our patients, while improving the workflow for our staff,” said hospital director Erwin Bormans.

The Barco bedside terminals fit perfectly in ZOL’s strategy of putting patients first. Bormans: “Our patients expect the multimedia experience they enjoy at home, in their hospital room too. By providing easy access to radio, TV and the Internet, we believe we can really enhance their comfort. The control of lights, blinds and, at a later stage, meal ordering, will give them a great sense of independence too. For nurses, the terminals will help save time, increase overall efficiency and improve communication with patients.” ZOL also plans to integrate other features, like secure access to electronic patient records and clinical information at the bedside, to further enhance the workflow.

Flexible and reliable

“The flexibility to easily extend the solution with other functions certainly influenced our decision to choose Barco’s bedside terminals. In addition, we are confident that a market leader like Barco delivers reliable technology,” Bormans added. “We trust that our patients will be enthusiastic about these new services. Of course, we will continually evaluate the terminals and adapt our offering when needed.”

Setting the tone

“Barco is delighted with this first installation of bedside smart terminals, including point-of-care enterprise software, in Belgium,” confirms Evelien De Smet, Segment Director EMEAI Point of Care Solutions, Healthcare Division. “The bedside terminals fit perfectly with Barco’s long-term vision of improving healthcare efficiency, in addition to giving patients a more comfortable stay. The demand for smart terminals is on the rise and we hope that ZOL will set the tone for more installations in the future.”
